Advisory for Indian Emigrants/Workers coming to Guyana

  • Indian nationals coming to Guyana for employment (emigrants) are advised to retain their original passports. Passport should not be handed over to the employer or anyone else. 

  • Kindly ensure that you have appropriate employment Visa if you are coming for employment. Any other visa including tourist will render you an illegal emigrant in the country if you are found to have been employed there.

  • Before accepting employment offer in India, please check the Registration Certificate of the Recruitment Agent in India, issued by the Protector General of Emigrants, Ministry of External Affairs of India. Do not deal with any other unregistered agent who is not authorized to recruit in India for overseas employment. 

  • Carefully go through the Employment Contract detailing the salary, allowances and other service conditions including the compulsory period after which the employer will grant airfare for travel to India. 

  • Before departure the emigrant should collect all the numbers and address of High Commission of India in Georgetown, Guyana.

  • Always keep a copy of the Employment Contract singed by you and your foreign employer duly attested by the registered recruiting agent, if any. 

  • Open a Saving Bank N.R.E. Account in one of the Banks in India to enable you to send your remittances from abroad.

  • Acquaint yourself with local labor laws, working and living conditions, culture of Guyana. Keep complete address of the Indian Embassy with you.

  • Obtain a work permit through your foreign employer from the Immigration office of the Ministry of Home Affairs of Guyana. 

  • Ensure with employer of proper and comfortable accommodation available for your stay and also clear and fair terms & conditions for payment of salary before signing the contract.

  • Register with the High Commission of India in Guyana on arrival and report any complaints about non-payment or delayed payment of salary or any other problem immediately. 

  • In case you misplace your Passport, inform the High Commission of India immediately giving them details, i.e. Passport number, date and place of issue, your name and date of your entry in Guyana. You can give these details only if you keep a photocopy of your Passport.

  • DO NOT lose your copy of Employment Contract. Make photocopies and keep them with you always.

  • You must have a full name, address, telephone number and email address of your foreign employer, before you leave India.

  • Before the Visa or Employment Contract expires, get them renewed. If you are returning to India for a short while during the tenure of your Employment Contract abroad, ensure that the validity period of Visa does not expire before you return to Guyana.

  • Also ensure that your Passport is valid. At least six months before it is about to expire, get it re-issued at the High Commission of India or from the concerned Regional Passport Office (RPO) in India.

  • Abide by local law: Take general precautions and abide by local laws and regulations, including undertaking recreational activities. (For example – not driving/swimming in inebriated condition; using life jackets during boating, etc).
